This friendly metropolis boasts pristine beaches, clear water, and plenty of coastline – not to mention an abundance of nature and mineral resources. Start your day of Perth sightseeing with a walk through Kings Park, which is larger than New York’s Central Park and home to the Western Australia Botanic Garden. More than 3,000 species of Western Australia’s plant life, including vibrant flowers, are on display here. Most of the park consists of bushland, which means lots of wildlife and quite a few walking trails. After a morning of reflection in the park, head over to the Swan Bell Tower to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. ...

The Margaret River region runs down the Western Australian coastline for over 80 miles, and stretches inland for a further 20. Busselton marks the beginning of one of Australia’s most scenic drives, Caves Road, which gets its name from the incredible limestone caves which honeycomb the region. Caves Road winds inland, through picturesque villages and historic timber towns, before arriving at the region’s main settlement, Margaret River. Surrounded by coasts on three sides, and enjoying virtually rain-free summers, as a wine-growing region, Margaret River has been compared to France’s famous Bordeaux region. Cruise from cellar door to cellar door, sampling some of the most exciting Chardonnays, Shirazs and Cabernet Sauvignons on the planet. At Margaret River’s northern end is Cape Natur...
The best things in life are (almost!) free, and that is certainly the case if you head to Perth in Western Australia. Distances between attractions can be vast, but the scenery is worth it. Striking rock formations rise from golden-sand deserts, and wildflowers erupt from the scorched earth in a breathtaking blaze of color from September through November. Closer to the city, sun lovers can bask on bone-white beaches with beautiful turquoise bays, while Perth's port city, Fre...

Dirty Business: How Mining Made Australia is the history of Australian mining. It portrays how over the last 150 years mining has made Australia rich, yet created an unending struggle over who shares in the wealth. It reveals how mining helped forge democracy yet has repeatedly plotted to influence politics and even overthrow democratically elected leaders. Whilst mining has also been deeply damaging to Aboriginal society, ironically in the 21st century, it may be aboriginal people's best hope of economic self-determination.

Those wild nights that ended in a toilet cubicle, the first strip club you entered, the five teapots of cocktails consumed at World Bar, the meat pie from a convenience store as you waited for hours for the first morning train. Savour them in your memory, it's time to say good bye to the king of debauchery, Kings Cross. You can only hold on to your 20s for so long, but fear not, grown Sydneysider, if history has taught us anything, the Cross will live again. Somehow, one day. There has been talk in recent years about the impending final farewell as the red lights turned off, the nightclub lights turned on and more recently, the streets became still and quiet after midnight. But we didn't want to believe it, Kings Cross, we shook our heads and took another shot. At the beginning of 2014, ...

As part of our latest research project for Bigger & Better Beyond the Boom, the Committee has developed a FACTBase Special Report that examines the spatial structure and dynamics of the Greater Perth economy. The research determines those industries that are emerging as critical to the region’s economy. Rather than limiting the focus to the transformative impact of the most recent boom period, this report takes a longitudinal perspective of the Greater Perth economy and how it has evolved. Three key questions are addressed: how and why the Perth economy has changed over time; how it has experienced and recovered from different shocks; and the level of resilience in particular industry sectors. At this Perth in Focus luncheon, Prof. Matthew Tonts, FACTBase convenor, presented the finding...
